Shadows of Time
is full-bound in leather, with the title foil blocked in silver on the spine. The front and back boards feature a wood engraving in a debossed surround. Both images refer to 'Remember Walking in the Sand', one of the three stories in the book, seen as if in the rear-view mirrors of a Vespa motor scooter. The story is about Mods in Brighton in the 1960s, and the striking, two-colour bindings were designed with Pop Art in mind. It is available in two versions, yellow-and-red and yellow-and-blue.
The book has been printed in two-colour letterpress throughout on Mohawk Superfine 148 gsm paper. Six wood engravings by Duncan Montgomery, including the two on the covers, were printed from the wood.
The page size is 160 x 120 mm and there are 72 pages. Each book is signed by author and artist and numbered.
The Roman Edition comes in a lined slipcase. The title is foil blocked in silver on the spine of the slipcase.
Each of the three stories explores author Ian Archie Beck's past.
When he wrote ‘Propping up the Line’, he imagined his grandfather's life and experiences during and after the First World War, and the effect his injuries had on his grandfather himself and his family.
‘Remember Walking in the Sand’ is based on his time as a Mod in 1960s Brighton.
And ‘Footsteps in the Snow’ looks at two families in 1970s London.
